Meta is slowing down or delaying the end-to-end encryption feature for Instagram and Facebook. Facebook is now Meta. Facebook and Instagram are one of the most popular social media platform having lot of interesting features. It has earlier declared in 2019 that, it is targeting to present a unified messaging system keeping privacy in mind.
The company was planning to rollout the feature at the beginning of coming year. The first half of the scheme is already up and running. But planning and ideas as we all know may always change according to situations. So, the second segment of the plan could possibly take a little longer. Meta slowing down End-to-End Encryption for Facebook and Instagram
As stated by a report of ‘ The Guardian’, Facebook messenger and Instagram were expected to get end to end encryption by default according to their plan. This feature was declared when the two apps were combined. This new feature was previously scheduled to be released at the beginning of 2022 as declared in the official blog post of Meta. Now the company is slowing it down to 2023.
In an Interview with ‘The Telegraph’, Meta’s head of safety Antigone Davis said, “we’re taking our time to get this right and we don’t plan to finish the global release of end-to-end encryption by default across all our messaging services until sometime in 2023.”
End-to-end encryption for Facebook and Instagram
According to Meta it has delayed end-to-end encryption for Facebook messenger and Instagram for privacy reasons. Meta wants to assure that this feature does not stop it to track criminal activity on it’s platforms. In it’s current encryption plans it will be capable to use unencrypted data, account information and reports from users to identify abuse on it’s platform.
This feature is already present in WhatsApp. In end to end encryption massages could only be seen by the sender and the recipient. So, this could make it hard to track any abuse or criminal activity on the platform.
After enabling this feature in WhatsApp, messenger video and voice calls now the target is to enable end-to-end encryption by default for messenger and Instagram. Mark Zuckerberg had announced this encryption last year as a part of coalition of Instagram and messenger. This feature will give the users capability to send messages across platforms.
As cyber crime is very common now a days, Meta is working on it to make it more safe to protect it’s users from any kind of abuse that they might face on the social platform.
